Adding the CAMRI core to your IACUC protocol

All CAMRI core service studies using live subjects are required to 1)have an approved IACUC protocol in place, and 2) have the IACUC approve the CAMRI service core use on the user IACUC protocol before initiating imaging service.

UNC users:
The instructions below are for UNC users adding a protocol amendment within the ACAP website to include the CAMRI core service. Please review the questions asked on ACAP below, and if alternative arrangements need to be made, please discuss with core first before completing the amendment. Questions asked on IACUC form in italics, sample user answers in red below.

Outside UNC users:
Users outside UNC will need to comply with their institution’s IACUC rules. Please submit to camri@unc.edu proof of 1) an approved IACUC protocol with your institution and 2) IACUC approval of CAMRI core service use, before initiating study. Also please discuss any arrangements regarding animal transport with CAMRI before initiating study.

When creating the protocol amendment in ACAP, check the following section:

  • 1.3 Will you be using the services of a UNC Core Facility or will procedures be performed under the protocol of another UNC PI?
  •

The form will look like this when finished (example):

1.3.1 UNC Core Facilities or UNC Collaborators
Will you be using the services of a UNC Core Facility or will procedures be performed under the protocol of another UNC PI? These arrangements should be discussed by all parties prior to completing this submission. Concise details should be requested from the PI providing services for inclusion in the appropriate sections of this protocol (i.e. surgery, breeding, behavioral testing, etc.)
This section is NOT required for the acquisition of existing animals or similar vendor-like relationships (i.e. Collaborative Cross mice that have not been manipulated.) If you are unsure of your arrangement, please contact the Core or Collaborator who will be providing animals to you.

UNC CORE FACILITY OR UNC COLLABORATOR

  1. Select one Core Facility or select “Other UNC PI” from the dropdown menu below.
21-114.0 – Small Animal Magnetic Resonance Imaging Core
If working with a UNC Collaborator, select “Other UNC PI” above and complete items A and B below. DO NOT complete items A and B if you have selected a Core Facility from the drop-down menu under Item 1 above.
    1. Using the search function, indicate the name of the UNC PI who will be collaborating with you, or providing services, as described under their approved protocol.
    2. Indicate the current protocol number for the UNC PI listed above that corresponds to the services or procedures you are listing in this section. Contact the PI to confirm this number if unsure.

SERVICES

  1. What type of procedures will be performed by the group listed above? Check all that apply.
    • ☐ Breeding (animals being bred to the specifications of the requesting PI for use on this protocol)
    • ☐ Surgery
    • ☐ Testing
    • ☐ Treatment
    • ☐ Irradiation
    • Imaging
      • 9.4T MR
      1. Imaging Frequency: bi-weekly (Answer may vary-study dependent.)
      2. Total Times Each Animal Will Be Imaged: 8 (Answer may vary-study dependent.)
  2. List the survival procedures and survival surgeries that will be performed by this group, or indicate if this is not applicable.
NA. The Core is only performing imaging services
  3. List the non-survival procedures and non-survival surgeries that will be performed by this group, or indicate if this is not applicable.
NA. The Core is only performing imaging services

MONITORING

  1. Who will be monitoring the animals during these procedures?
Core/Collaborator and Lab (Answer may vary-study dependent.)
  2. Who will be monitoring the animals immediately after these procedures during recovery?
Core/Collaborator and Lab (Answer may vary-study dependent.)
  3. Please indicate when animals will return to the PI requesting services, or if animals will remain with the Core through the end of the study.
After fMRI scanning, the animal will be returned to the PI. (Answer may vary-study dependent.)

AGENTS USED

  1. Will any hazardous agents be used as part of these procedures?
    Yes, per Core/Collaborator protocol(Answer may vary-study dependent.)
  2. Will any anesthetic agents be used as part of these procedures?
    Yes, per Core/Collaborator protocol(Answer may vary-study dependent.)
  3. Will any contrast or radioactive agents be used as part of these procedures?
    Yes, per Core/Collaborator protocol(Answer may vary-study dependent.)

TRANSPORTATION

All animal movement on campus should rigorously ensure the animal(s) have a consistent and appropriate environment, are completely and inconspicuously concealed, and that sensible security precautions are observed during transport. Routes should be planned to minimize transport time and contact with the public. It is expected that PI’s transporting animals will review and adhere to the UNC Animal Transport and Biosecurity Standards.
  1. Will animals be transported to/from the building before or after procedures?
    ○ yes no (Answer may vary-study dependent.)
    1. If so, who is responsible for transportation? (check all that apply)
      • ☐PI/Lab Personnel
      • ☐Core Personnel
    2. How will animals be transported? (check all that apply)
      • ☐Carry or covered cart
      • ☐DCM vehicle
      • ☐Official animal resource transport vehicle of non-UNC institution with appropriate environmental controls (ventilation, heating, cooling, lighting)
      • ☐Other

      1. If “Other” mode of transport is selected, explain below. Note: the use of private vehicles for transport is strongly discouraged, and transporting animals using University vehicles not maintained by DCM (i.e. Zipcars, Point to Point, Campus Bus or Carolina Motor Pool) is not permitted.
