Animal / Specimen Preparation

Live animals

  1. Please do not use metal ear tags for animal ID.
  2. Please use a marker or tattoo to label the animal.
  3. If you need to treat an animal by IV injection, please use only marker.

Specimens

  1. Please choose well sealed, appropriately sized containers. ex: NMR tube, syringe, clear acrylic, 15ml/50ml cfg tube.
  2. We have the following diameter coils available: 86 mm, 35 mm, 25 mm, and 5mm
  3. Please remove air bubbles, it is best to use negative pressure to vacuum out the bubbles.
  4. Please make sure to remove all metal parts on the specimen if any.

Transfer

  1. When transporting live animals and specimens, please review and adhere to the latest policy on UNC Animal Transport and Biosecurity Standards
  2. If transporting animals/specimens with chemicals, please refer to UNC EHS policy on Transporting Research Materials and contact UNC EHS at (919) 962-5507 with any questions.
  3. Please contact UNC DCM Animal Transport Specialist at 919-966-0711 or 919-843-5031 before transporting animals/specimens to confirm any health reports and screening requirements needed before transport.
  4. Cover all cages and animal equipment (regardless of animal presence) with an opaque breathable cover, and refer to the Transfer Location for directions.
  5. Transportation will be the user’s responsibility unless otherwise discussed in the initial core meeting.
